Several Polls Show Extraordinary Support for Independence Among Puerto Rico’s Youth

Support is Rising for Puerto Rican Independence
By Alberto Medina The Progressive Magazine
A recent survey by El Nuevo Día shows a significant increase in support for political sovereignty in Puerto Rico, with 25% favoring sovereignty in free association and 19% for independence. This is a significant shift from previous surveys and votes, which showed a single-digit support for sovereignty. The poll also found 44% support for statehood, a decrease from 53% in a 2020 status plebiscite. The shift is largely a generational one, with the pro-independence candidate garnering an outright majority among young voters aged 18 to 34.
43.14 % of the voters supported sovereignty options (Sovereignity in Free Association and Independence) in the November 2024 Non-Biding Plebiscite.
Mock School Elections are Another Strong Indicator of the Generational Shift in Political Attitudes.
A good indicator of the generational political shift occurring in Puerto Rico can be seen through the lens of the mock elections that were held in Puerto Rico’s schools in 2024. Juan Dalmau, the Candidate for Governor for the Independence Party (who Finished Second in the Actual Election), won ALL mock school elections in Schools by a considerable margin. Here are two results: one from a school in the capital of San Juan and another one from a school in the city of Mayagüez on the western part of the Island.

There is a Clear Tendency in Favor of Independence Amoung Puerto Rico’s Youth.
